Providing leadership in Christian distance education through resources, community, and promotion

Kirby Francis

Kirby is originally from New Brunswick, Canada. From an early age, his local Baptist church was the main place to exercise a love for teaching and speaking. He preached his first sermon at age 16 and has been active in ministry ever since. Following a B.A. in History and French at the University of New Brunswick, Kirby completed his Master's of Divinity (M.Div.) at Southeastern Seminary in North Carolina, specializing in Biblical Languages and Christian Missions. During his time pastoring two rural churches in New Brunswick, his interest in the ministry applications of technology grew, especially for demographically mixed audiences. Following his Masters in Theology (Th.M.) at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Kirby worked with two Fortune 50 companies, honing his technology skills with Apple, Inc. as a trainer in Digital Video Production workflows.

He is currently the Director of the Department of Educational Support Services at Gordon-Conwell, where he directs efforts to use technologies to advance theological education. Kirby preaches at churches throughout the North Shore of Massachusetts, and plays electric guitar, mandolin, and harmonica for the worship team at Hope Community Church in Newburyport, MA. He has been married to his wife Annie for over 15 years, and has two children.

The title of his conversation with us will be A disruptive Gospel: Missional perspectives in Christian distance education. Kirby plans to help us think through a greater understanding of mission in the face of disruption or what is becoming for some, less than optimal situations in online education.

Kirby is an excellent speaker and engages his listeners with energy, a passion for theological perspectives, and an understanding of the broader scope of Christian distance education.
